On arrival in Assisi, your driver will take you to the Basilica of St Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Always considered a true treasure of Italian Christian art, the basilica is divided into two parts, plus the crypt that houses the tomb of Italy’s patron saint. In addition to the splendour of the structure, we recommend a visit to the interior to admire the frescoes by the great Italian masters such as Giotto and Cimabue.

We continue our journey towards the Basilica of Santa Chiara, just a few kilometres away. The two basilicas face each other to emphasise the connection between the two saints. Once inside, you can admire the Gothic architecture and the relics of the saint. From both basilicas you have a beautiful view of the city.

We move outside the ancient walls to enjoy the view of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, with its Roman Baroque-inspired façade. Your driver will take you close to the entrance to allow you to enter and visit the Porziuncola, a small church built inside the Basilica itself. It was here that St Francis accepted his vocation and it is still one of the most important places for Franciscans.

The last stop on our itinerary is the Hermitage of the Prisons, the place where St Francis and his devotees used to retreat to pray. We drive to the building, which was built on the slopes of Mount Subasio, next to some natural caves that were already frequented by hermits in the early Christian period.

The Pantheon has a special feature in its dome, an oculus, which gives an ethereal glow to the interior of the sanctuary. It houses the tomb of the famous Renaissance artist Raphael.

Our journey continues to the Trevi Fountain, a majestic work where the ritual of tossing a coin is still deeply rooted in tourists and locals alike.

Back on board your vehicle, we travel to the Spanish Steps. Awaiting us is the famous Barcaccia Fountain, at the foot of the Spanish Steps.

We go to Piazza Navona, completely lined with sanpietrini (cobblestones), where there are three fountains, the most famous of which is Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers and the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone.

We go to the terrace of Rome to enjoy a breathtaking view of the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum, the historic centre and the Colosseum. Near the Capitol we will see the Vittoriano, the War Memorial and the Altar of the Fatherland.

The last stop on our journey is the Appia Antica, the oldest of the roads leading to Rome. The long route runs through a natural park where the remains of important historical buildings can still be seen.

The first stop on our itinerary is Frascati, the symbolic city of Roman castles. Frascati is famous for its many natural areas, parks, archaeological sites and a wonderful belvedere.

On a clear day you can even see Rome from here. As well as hosting international events, the town is famous for its food and wine: the white wine of the Popes and the ‘coppiette’ (pork cut into strips, seasoned and dried).

We continue to Albano Laziale, where every corner of the town bears witness to the rich history of the Roman people.

Situated on the Via Appia, it is home to the famous Baths of Caracalla, the Catacombs of San Senatore and the tombs of the Orazi and Curiazi. Not to be missed is the Cisternone, a huge cistern dug out of the rock with five naves.

The journey continues to Nemi, a terrace overlooking the green and dark blue of the lake of the same name, one of the two lakes of volcanic origin that, together with Lake Albano, define the contours of the Castelli Romani.

Famous for its strawberry production, Nemi is a tourist center for the whole area.

The itinerary ends at Castel Gandolfo, the famous summer residence of the Popes, crowned by many other summer residences, villas and small houses built from the 17th century onwards. The town overlooks Lake Albano, the deepest volcanic lake in Italy. It is a destination for many tourists in both summer and winter, as the ‘lakeside’ is full of clubs, restaurants and many other attractions.

It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and suitable clothing with shoulders and legs covered. It is also possible to request a qualified guide and entrance tickets to the various monuments when booking.

The itinerary continues to the Pantheon, the temple of all the gods, famous for the oculus on the ceiling, an architectural detail that allows light to enter the temple.

We continue to another spectacular monument: The Trevi Fountain, one of Rome’s most popular attractions and the setting for Federico Fellini’s famous film La Dolce Vita, starring Anita Ekberg.

Piazza di Spagna, at the foot of the Spanish Steps, is the heart of Rome. At the foot of the 136 steps is the famous Barcaccia, one of the many symbolic fountains of the city.

We head to Piazza Navona and Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers. Covered with the characteristic sanpietrini, the square is also home to the Chiusa di Sant’Agnese in Agone.

Admire the view of Rome from the Capitol Hill, where you can catch a glimpse of the ruins of the Roman Forum and the historic center. Nearby: The Altar of the Fatherland, in Piazza Venezia.
